England along with Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups conclude according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
